Discernment Counseling

Not sure if your marriage can or should be saved?

Discernment Counseling is for what we call "mixed agenda" couples, in which one person is leaning in to the marriage, and one person is leaning out. The goal is not to repair the relationship, but rather for both people to find some clarity and confidence in choosing one of three paths based on a deeper understanding of what's happened to the marriage and each person's contributions to the problems.

  • Path 1:  Keep things as they are. You're not ready to divorce, but you also aren't ready to try therapy. You can always come back if things change.

  • Path 2: Move toward divorce. In this case, I would help you find divorce professionals who can help make the process as healthy as possible for everyone involved, especially for kids.

  • Path 3: , Put divorce entirely off the table for 6 months and really try a course of couples therapy. That can be with me, or I can refer you to another couples' therapist. If, at the end of the 6 months, you still decide to end the marriage, you both will have done some important examination of your own contribution to this relationship, and keep from making similar mistakes next time.

Discernment Counseling is brief, limited to 5 sessions.
